Shrimps end season with point
Morecambe finished their season with a goalless draw against Bury at the Globe Arena on Saturday.
Shakers stopper Brian Jensen was the busier of the two goalkeepers but the Shrimps couldn’t find a winner as they finished 18th in League 2.
The game started at a high tempo with neither side creating any clear-cut chances, Ryan Williams seeing a shot from 20 yards helped wide by a Bury head on three minutes.
Veteran Shakers stopper Brian Jensen was called into action for the first time on 19 minutes, getting a strong hand to Kevin Ellison’s effort from 15 yards to help it round the post.
Three minutes later a deep Padraig Amond cross found Jack Redshaw at the back post who, just managing to keep the ball in play, helped it across the face of goal with no-one on hand to score.
The hosts were having by far the better of the play and nearly went ahead on 25 minutes, Redshaw again at the heart of the move.
The front man weaved his way past three defenders and into the area with his chipped cross being kept alive by Amond but Andy Fleming could only direct his volley into the floor with it bouncing up and onto the top of the net.
Apart from the Shrimps’ brief flurry the first half however was typical end of season fare, Jensen tipping over Fleming’s 20-yard effort five minutes before the break.
The Shrimps were then forced to scramble clear on the stroke of half-time after Barry Roche had failed to punch as cross clear as the first period ended goalless.
Bentley’s side continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock however, Jensen pulling off an excellent save 10 minutes into the second half to deny Fleming from 12 yards.
Robbie Threlfall then drilled in a low shot from 20 yards on the hour with Amond coming close to diverting home.
The visitors grew into the game in the second period however and came within a whisker of an opener 18 minutes from time, captain Craig Jones won a battle with Andy Parrish down the right and pulled the ball back for Danny Mayor who fired narrowly over from 15 yards.
Both sides went in search of a winner, with Bury particularly threatening, but the Shrimps and the Shakers were forced to settle for a share of the spoils on the final day of the season.
