35-yard thunderbolt sees York take the points

RUSSELL Penn’s 35-yard thunderbolt saw the Shrimps suffer their first away defeat since February.

The home captain secured maximum points on 51 minutes with his second goal of the season after Stephane Zubar had earlier cancelled out Paul Mullin’s tenth-minute opener for the visitors.

The Shrimps, who were without the injured Andy Fleming, started the game superbly and went ahead after just 10 minutes after a fine move.

Penn was disposessed by Paul Mullin who found Padraig Amond down the left hand side. he teed up Aaron Wildig and his low cross was diverted past goalkeeper Michael Ingham by an alert Paul Mullin from six yards.

The Shrimps continued on the front foot and played some excellent football but unfortunately the final pass was wasteful on several occasions and they were made to pay.

After a poor start York responded with efforts from Shaun Miller and Jake Hyde, that were both dragged wide, before Zubar levelled the scores on 35 minutes with a controversial goal.

The on-loan Bournemouth defender climbed high at the far post to divert Luke Summerfield’s left-wing corner across the line though Morecambe players claimed a foul on keeper Ward and a handball.

York kicked off the second half in a much more determined mood with Hyde seeing a header cleared off the line, before Penn struck with a stunning 35-yard drive that gave Ward no chance as it flew into the top left hand corner.

Morecambe's only moments of threat came from a wild Wildig shot from the edge of the area and an attack that saw Kevin Ellison denied by a moment of sharp goalkeeping from Ingham who raced from his goal to deny the Morecambe striker a chance to shoot.
