Shrimps Host Football League Competition

Morecambe FC welcomed school teams from across the north of England to Globe Arena on 10thMarch; for the Regional Finals of the Kinder+ Sport Kids Cup.

The Football League competition gives schools the chance to progress all the way to Wembley, where the Grand Final takes place in May.

Lancaster Road School represented the Shrimps, after their victory in January’s Area Final.  Other schools took part representing Hartlepool United, Shrewsbury Town, Accrington Stanley, Burton Albion, Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, Mansfield Town, Bury FC and York City.

Lancaster Road registered a fine 3-0 win over Hartlepool, drew 0-0 with an impressive Shrewsbury team and then succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Accrington, meaning they narrowly missed-out on a place in the semi-finals.

A series of thrilling games culminated in a final between York City and Accrington Stanley.  With both teams playing excellent football, it was always going to be a tight game and Stanley came out on top with a deserved 1-0 win.  The team from Huncoat Primary School will go on to represent Accrington in the Grand Final at Wembley in May.

Morecambe Community Manager Janet Preston said, “It’s been a great pleasure to host the Regional Finals and the standard of football and sportsmanship has been excellent.  We wish the Accrington team well in the final and we know they will have a fantastic experience at Wembley.”
