Yeovil Town 2-4 Morecambe

MORECAMBE produced a fine second half comeback to take maximum points at Huish Park.

After a poor first half which saw the Shrimps trail 2-0 despite the home side being reduced to 10 men, Morecambe looked far sharper in the second period and scored four goals for the second successive league game.

The Shrimps suffered the worst possible start to the game when Harry Cornick put the hosts ahead after just a minute.

Paul Strurock’s side then saw Shaun Jeffers sent off for a high challenge on Aaron McGowan on 27 minutes but they increased their lead through Omar Sowunmi three minutes later.

Goals after the break from Aaron Wildig and Andy Fleming levelled things up before Lee Molyneux put The Shrimps in front on 84 minutes and Kevin Ellison completed the win in stoppage time.

Yeovil's opener came with just 60 seconds on the clock.

Jack Compton got in behind on the left and fired a ball across the face of goal with Cornick on hand to convert from close range at the back post.

The Shrimps replied with Tom Barkhuizen’s shot on the turn from 20 yards forcing a save from Artur Krysiak.

Shaun Miller then sliced a shot wide of the near post shortly after the quarter hour as The Glovers made little attempt to press home their advantage.

The hosts’ lead looked even more precarious when Jeffers was shown a harsh straight red card for a high studs up challenge on McGowan on 27 minutes.

But it was The Glovers who got the game’s next goal, doubling their advantage two minutes later.

Captain Nathan Smith overlapped down the left and hung up a high cross with Sowunmi getting the better of Adam Dugdale to head beyond Roche.

Yeovil then went close to a third. Ryan Edwards was nearly made to pay for gifting the ball to Iffy Allen on the stroke of half-time but the substitute saw his shot beaten away by Roche.

Half time came at a good time for the Shrimps and after some stern words from Jim Bentley at the break they looked a different proposition in the second period.

Lee Molyneux came on for Aaron McGowan and a change of formation paid off with the substitute at the heart of things.

Molyneux fired narrowly over from 20 yards before testing Krysiak with a 25-yard shot on the hour mark.

Andy Fleming then went close, poking wide at the far post after Paul Mullin’s cross had evaded Shaun Miller.

The Yeovil defence was finally beaten on 63 minutes with Aaron Wildig producing a superb finish to volley Paul Mullin’s cross acrobatically past Krysiak from 12 yards out.

That goal proved to be the spark the Shrimps needed and they dominated with an equaliser coming 20 minutes from time.

The visitors counter attacked at pace with Laurence Wilson, having raced half the length of the field, squaring for Fleming to score on the stretch at the far post.

The Shrimps nearly squandered their fine work on 74 minutes but after Cornick had robbed Roche of possession on the edge of the area, Ryan Edwards was on hand to head clear.

It was Morecambe who continued to dominate though, Fleming failing to make proper contact when in on goal after being found by Wildig’s chip over the top.

The Shrimps were increasingly taking chances and leaving the back door open, Ryan Bird heading wide for the hosts on 78 minutes when he perhaps should have done better.

The comeback was complete six minutes from time however, Molyneux completing another fine counter by drilling a low shot past Krysiak from 15 yards.

Morecambe nearly extended their advantage on 88 minutes but Kevin Ellison saw a header come back off the post.

Ellison wasn’t to be denied though heading home Molyneux’s deflected shot in stoppage time to complete a memorable comeback and earn the Shrimps a second successive win.
