Comedy Night

22 April 2016

Comedy Acts pay homage to Eric Morecambe.

Comedy talent from all over the country travelled to Morecambe on Saturday 12 March 2016 to take part in the first audition in the Search for a Comedy Star.

It was standing room only at the Jubilee Club as host Tony Jo introduced the acts competing for a place in the Grand Final. The line up on the night was Penella Mellor, John Lory, Marvin Dickenson and the Comedy Check Out.

The winner of the battle for laughs was Bournemouth based John Lory who received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd at the end of his act and said ‘I am delighted to win this first round against such talented competition but I am also honoured to have had the opportunity to appear at the Jubilee Club where Eric Morecambe made his first stage appearance in 1934 as an eight year old. The interaction with the audience was fantastic and I can’t wait to return to Morecambe for the Grand Final in April.‘

Eric later changed his surname to that of his home town and joined up with Ernie to form the double act of Morecambe& Wise. They made their debut at the Liverpool Empire in 1941 and this year we will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary.

Hugh Rogers – Secretary at the Jubilee Club said ‘Thank you for a fantastic night at the Jubilee!

It really was a night of comedy that we will never forget and our members will be talking about it for a long, long time to come.’

The bonus was the Morecambe & Wise Heritage Trail Plaque that Jim Cadman presented to the Club and this will now become the centre piece of a special tribute wall that will in the coming months be surrounded by a special collection of Eric & Ernie memorabilia.

The Grand Final of Search for a Comedy Star hosted by Tony Jo will be at the Globe Arena, Morecambe on Saturday 23 April 2016 when the five regional winners will take part.

The winner of the Grand Final will appear in The Morecambe and Wise 75th Anniversary Variety Show at Blackpool’s famous Opera House in July.

The Search for a Comedy Star is part of the Morecambe &Wise 75th Anniversary Tribute and all profits will be used for the Morecambe & Wise Heritage Trail in the Bay area where ten plaques created by sculptor Graham Ibbeson will be sited in locations that have association with Morecambe & Wise. These will include the Jubilee Club and the Globe Arena.
