Accrington Stanley vs Morecambe

27 August 2016

Accrington Stanley 2-3 Morecambe

TWO goals from Cole Stockton earned The Shrimps a first ever Football League win over Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground.

The on loan Tranmere striker scored in each half as the Shrimps came from two goals down after former Morecambe skipper Mark Hughes was sent off for hauling him down just after the half hour mark.

At the time the Shrimps were two goals down after Billy Kee had bagged a brace.

The Stanley striker had missed two glorious opportunities in the early stages of the game before opening the scoring with a stunning strike from 25 yards.

He then added a second as he got on to the end of a John O'Sullivan cross to score from close range and give Accrington a clear advantage.

The Hughes incident than changed the game with a decision that infuriated Stanley boss John Coleman.

The Shrimps, who had been second best for long periods then scented blood and took full advantage.

Stockton led the charge when he got in front of his man to head home Michael Rose's cross on the stroke of half time to raise the Shrimps' spirits.

That lift was clear to see when Morecambe levelled on 47 minutes through Kevin Ellison after the Stanley defence failed to clear their lines.

The Shrimps then went ahead for the first time when Stockton added a third when he cut inside from the left and unleashed a low shot past Parish.

The Stanley keeper made a fine save from Tom Barkhuizen and Ellison flashed a shot over before Stanley ended the game on the front foot with Beckles flicking a header inches wide in the closing minutes of the game.

The Shrimps held on though to claim their fourth win in five league games to maintain their spot at the top of League 2.
