Show Racism the Red Card

10 February 2016

Show Racism the Red Card celebrates 20 years of educating about and campaigning against, racism.

On February 15th 1996, Shaka Hislop and John Beresford, then both Newcastle United FC players visited Westgate Community College with a fledgling Show Racism the Red Card to talk to pupils about racism.

Shaka Hislop, SRtRC Honorary President and Former Newcastle United Goalkeeper said:
“I can’t believe it’s been just about 20 years since Bez (John Beresford) and I visited Westgate Community College. As much as John and I knew we could count on the support of our teammates and the always supportive NUFC, I don’t think either of us dared imagine the response we’d get from our local community, the support we’d get from footballers across the country, and how everyone would embrace the efforts of footballers trying to make a difference. Thanks to all the players, teammates and rivals alike, who have shown that there is no white line when it comes to serving the community. And in particular to all those children who have taken part in the programme over the years, you have given us back so much more than we could’ve ever hoped for.”

Show Racism the Red Card is holding some special events to celebrate 20 years of the campaign, including a special football match between our patrons, former players and MPs.

Keep up to date with everything we have planned by checking in with the campaign’s social media channels and Forthcoming Events section of the website.
