MORECAMBE 0-4 WIGAN ATHLETIC

31 October 2017

MORECAMBE’S Under 18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup when they went down 4-0 to Wigan at the Globe Arena.

The young Shrimps started well but two penalties from Victor Maffeo and goals from Will McGuffie and Mwiya Malumo gave the Latics victory.

Morecambe were quick out of the blocks with striker Kyle Hawley close to opening the scoring in the third minute with a superb turn and shot from the edge of the area that just cleared the crossbar.

Stewart Drummond’s side continued to press with Ezekiel Eme close to stabbing the ball home from close range after a good run and cross from Joe Nelligan.

Wigan always looked dangerous going forward and they took the lead on 29 minutes. A left wing corner was swung into the box and Will McGuffie beat his man to head past Ollie Jumeau from close range.

The Latics then made it 2-0 with a penalty on 41 minutes. Mwiya Malumo was brought down in the area and Victor Maffeo made no mistake from the spot kick.

The Shrimps started the second half brightly with Hawley again going close from distance before the visitors began to get on top.

Divin Baningime saw a close range volley hit the crossbar before the Latics added a third with a second penalty when Maffeo once again sending Jumeau the wrong way from the spot.

The Shrimps conceded a fourth eight minutes from time when striker Malumo beat Jumeau from a tight angle after breaking into the Morecambe box to give the scoreline something of a flattering look.
