PRESTON NORTH END V MORECAMBE

14 August 2018

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley is hoping history repeats itself when his side visit Preston North End in the League Cup this evening.

Bentley scored one of the goals as the Shrimps secured a shock 2-1 victory over North End in the same competition in 2007 and is hoping for the same result tonight to kick start his side’s season.

Bentley said: “That was a great night. It was our first week of being a Football League club and it was a huge win for us.

“We had a great following and everyone was buzzing after the game.

“It would be great to get the same feeling tonight. We don’t know what Preston will do in terms of resting one or two or going for it.

“However, they’re a fantastic side and we’ll go there trying to express ourselves and give it our all. “It’s a massive game against Championship opposition but I want the lads to go there and, win, lose or draw, come away with their heads held high.”

Bentley is also looking forward to meeting up with a former player in Tom Barkhuizen who has become a firm fans’ favourite at Deepdale since moving there.

He said: “It’s great to see Tom doing well but I’ve seen him on the motorway a couple of times and he’s gone a bit flasher than the BMW he used to have.

“First and foremost, it’s been fantastic to see him develop, do well and score goals.

“I’m disappointed in the manner we lost him but I look at him as a person who was thinking of giving the game up after leaving Blackpool.’’
