Morecambe FC is strengthening its worldwide connections, with the launch of a new Academy programme.
The ‘International Academy’ will offer overseas players the opportunity to visit England and learn from the club’s coaching and medical professionals and become immersed in the daily life of a working football club.
Academy coaching staff will deliver sessions focussed on technical/tactical aspects of the game; gym work, strength and conditioning and classroom sessions.
The programme will also offer Morecambe FC the chance to identify talented players from around the world.
The International Academy launches with the ‘Train Like A Pro’ programme; with the first intake of overseas players expected in October. There will be subsequent programmes for team tours and individual trials.
Darren Finch, Youth Development Phase Lead with Morecambe’s Academy is the driving force behind the International Academy and has drawn upon his extensive overseas coaching experience, to develop the programme, “During my time in Sydney, Australia I saw the great enthusiasm and willingness to learn from the players over there. With professional football opportunities limited in many countries, players don’t have access to the coaching that we can offer.”
“Our initial focus has been on developing the links with Australia, but as the programme expands, we will be working with partners in a number of countries worldwide.”
Stewart Drummond, Morecambe’s Head of Youth, is confident the programme will benefit the Club: “as part of our recruitment strategy, we are casting the net far and wide, searching for talent. This programme gives us the chance to work closely with players who would otherwise be off our radar. It also helps develop contacts, as we expand our scouting network around the world.”
