CHESTER 2-2 MORECAMBE

24 July 2018

The Shrimps maintain their unbeaten pre season run with a battling 2-2 draw at Chester.

The Shrimps conceded a penalty after 20 minutes when Sam Lavelle was judged to have brought down Jon Moran in the penalty area as a set play was delivered.

John Pritchard’s penalty was well saved by Mark Halstead who got down well to his right to palm the effort round the post.

Four minutes later the Shrimps were ahead after Liam Mandeville’s cross was met by Kevin Ellison at the back post. His volley was well blocked by Steve Howson but the loose ball fell to Andrew Fleming who took a touch and slotted the ball past Grant Shenton into the net.

Two minutes later Chester were level when Gary Stopforth took a quick free kick in the wide left area of the Shrimps defensive third, the ball was whipped far post by John Pritchard and was headed home by Steven Howson.

The second half was a cagey encounter with both sides making changes. Morecambe regained the lead when Kevin Ellison was brought down in the penalty area and Jason Oswell made no mistake from the spot, blasting the ball into the top right stanchion.

Chester again went level within a few minutes. Jordan Cranston blocked Matty Hughes’ effort with a raised hand and the third penalty of the game was awarded.

Gary Roberts beat Mark Halstead high to his left to make it 2-2.

The Shrimps chased a winner in the final minutes of the game and created a golden opportunity when some quick play between Jason Oswell and Ben Hedley saw Adam Campbell clean through on goal, only for referee Peter Gibbons to prematurely blow for a foul on Oswell and deny Adam Campbell the chance to record his fourth goal of the pre season campaign and potentially win it for the Shrimps at the death.
