Morecambe FC Community Sports hosted the annual Girls Cup competition on Friday 16th November. Here a total of 15 schools from the local area and around 120 Girls participated in the event.
What is the Girls Cup?
The EFL Girls Cup comprimises of a six-a-side competition for U13 girls that culminates in a grand final prior to the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium in April. The road to the Finals starts when the new school term starts. Each EFL club organises a local competition for all local schools wishing to take part.
For this year's competition, Morecambe FC managed to get a total of 15 schools to participate which made for a really entertaining day of football. Community Sports' aim of the Girls Cup is to get more girls involved in playing football and make it a sport that they enjoy; also aiming to get as many schools as possible from the local area involved.
After competing in several matches, the final of Morecambe FC's Girls Cup came down to Lancaster Girls Grammar and Dowdales School (from Dalton in Furness towards Barrow). In the end LGGS came away from the match victorious and where crowned winners of the Girls Cup in the local competition.
Lancaster Girls Grammar School will now go on to represent Morecambe Football Club into the next round of the competition, the Area Final. This will be played in the week commencing 7th January 2019 where they will have to go up against the winning girls team from the 9 other local EFL clubs in their group. Being played at Bolton Wanderers' football ground, they will compete alongside Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Carlisle United, Bury, Fleetwood Town, Accrington Stanley and Wigan Athletic.
On behalf of everyone at Morecambe Football Club we wish them the best of luck in the competition and would also like to thank all of the schools that participated in the Girls Cup this year.
