THOMPSON AIMS FOR MORE MILESTONES

27 November 2018

SHRIMPS’ veteran Garry Thompson is looking to reach more milestones after making his 750th career appearance on Saturday.

Thompson came off the bench against his former club for his first league outing of the season and in doing so chalked up 750 senior appearances at clubs including Morecambe, Scunthorpe, Bradford, Notts County and Wycombe.

After overcoming a potentially career threatening Achilles injury Thompson, who was 38 on Saturday, says he is aiming for 800 games - or even more - now.

He said: “When I got to 700 I immediately looked for 750 and now I’ve reached that I want to go for 800 and set the bar higher and higher.

“It’s been a tough six or seven months and there were times I didn’t think I'd get here but now I want to put all that behind me and crack on and make another 50, 100 or whatever appearances.’'

Looking back at Saturday’s game Thompson said: “When you come off the bench you want to make an impact. Kev was the same and I was delighted to see him get this goal and you can’t ask for much more really.

“It was good to get out on the pitch and help the boys out. It was a tough game and both sides looked a bit nervous at first. We put them under pressure at the end and should have had a penalty as well.

“It was a special day really as it was my birthday as well and I’m just hoping I can build on that now.''
