FLEETWOOD 4-0 RESERVES

16 October 2018

A young Shrimps side were undone by four second half goals from Ged Gardner, Dan Mooney and Jay Metete at Poolfoot Farm this afternoon.

Morecambe started the game brightly and created the first chance of the game when Carlos Mendes Gomes cut in from the left hand side to shoot right footed from 20 yards, the shot though was too close to Fleetwood’s goalkeeper who smothered the ball.

Fleetwoods first chance came when Dan Mooney broke down the right side after 10 minutes and crossed the ball to the back post for Ged Garner to have his volley well saved by Dawid Szczepaniak in the Morecambe goal.

Garner was denied again by the Polish keeper after 20 minutes when this time a cross from the right was met at the front post by the Fleetwood striker. Szczepaniak saving at point blank range with his feet.

Just 90 seconds later Szczepaniak was called upon again when Garner found himself 1v1 with the keeper after a ball over the top of Shrimps centre half Tyler Brownsword, Szczepaniak spread himself well and blocked the shot which fell to Kyle Dempsey who pulled his left footed shot wide of the post.

The Shrimps almost went ahead themselves when Ben Hedley slipped the ball down thew side of the Fleetwood left sided centre half for Joe Piggott, the Wigan loanee flashed the ball across goal but the onrushing Jason Oswell couldn’t provide the finishing touch.

With half time approaching the Shrimps looked to counter from a Fleetwood corner with Jagne bursting forward. The youngster was met by a strong challenge from the Fleetwood full back and was stretchered off with a knee injury.

5 minutes into the second half Fleetwood broke the deadlock. Dan Mooney broke down the side of the Shrimps defence in a similar fashion to Piggott in the first half. His cutback though found Jed Garner who slotted the ball home to make it 1-0.

The Shrimps were almost level on the hour mark when Oswell met a cross from the right, his effort was well saved at the front post by Fleetwood keeper.

Fleetwood doubled their lead on 68 minutes when Szczepaniak mis-controlled a back-pass from Steven Rigby, the Shrimps keeper’s error gifted Jed Garner his second of the game.

Dan Mooney made it 3-0 when his 25 yard strike hit the back of the net to seal the win for Fleetwood.

Jay Matete completed the scoring when he made it 4-0 from inside the shrimps area after some neat buildup play with the young defence pinned in.
