WILLIAM SMITH TOURNAMENT

The 2019 William Smith football tournament saw Lancaster Road be crowned champions at the Giant Axe where they put on an impressive display.

The William Smith tournament has always been a footballing tradition for primary schools in the Lancaster and Morecambe area. This years event again took place at Lancaster City FC's ground the Giant Axe, where in total there were 7 schools with a total of 12 teams that entered into the competition with last years' winners Greatwood looking to regain the trophy.

The teams were split into three seperate groups, as shown in the tables below this is how it looked after each team had played their 3 group stage matches.

*Teams highlighted in bold got through to the Quarter- Final stage of the competition*

Moving into the Quarter Final stage Bolton le Sands A team played Moorside A (2-0), Lancaster Road A where up against St Wilfred's (3-0), Grosvenor Park played Slyne with Hest A (1-0) and Greatwood A played Moorside B (4-0).

The Semi- Final matches just left Bolton le Sands up against Greatwood's A team and Lancaster Road A team against Grosvenor Park. Greatwood secured their place in the final of the competition with a 1-0 win over Bolton le Sands where as Lancaster Road where convicing winners in their match getting a 5-0 victory.

So then finally getting through to the final we had Greatwood versus Lancaster Road; it had all the makings of a close game with both teams looking really sharp throughout the competition. The two teams produced end to end action with both sides having some great opportunities and playing some really good football.

With a few minutes remaining Lancaster Road took the lead in dramatic fashion, Greatwood tried to respond by getting a goal back but Lancaster Road defended well as a team to keep the lead. The full time whistle then went and the closely contested final resulted in a 1-0 win for Lancaster Road; crowned as the winners of the 2019 William Smith Tournament.

Looking back through the archive of previous winners of the tournament we have had three different schools win the competition in the past three years which has certainly made it interesting. On behalf of everyone at Morecambe FC Community Sports we would like to thank all those that entered the competition and who gave up their bank holiday monday to make it.
