GRIMSBY DEFEAT FRUSTRATING

5 August 2019

SHRIMPS’ boss Jim Bentley said Saturday’s defeat to Grimsby was “frustrating.’’

After seeing his side lose 2-0 on the opening day of the season to two second half Grimsby goals he said: “It was a very frustrating all round because we all know we are capable of better

“We went into the game with high hopes. Our pre-season performances were positive especially at Everton and against Accrington and we looked good but we never really got going on Saturday.

“I thought the game had 0-0 written all over about it. It wasn’t a great game. Everyone tried to do the right thing but it just didn’t click and neither side had a real chance to be honest.

“The game changed on the free kick and I will take the blame for the that. You have to have a lot of different things in your armoury and the free kick routine has been something we have USED since I played under Jim Harvey and apart from when we were let down by an official last year it has always worked.

“This time it didn’t though and that proved the critical moment.

“We looked edgy after that and they grew in confidence and it became difficult for the next 10 or 15 minutes until we started to put them under pressure ourselves only to get caught on the break for a second when we pushed everyone forward.

“We were frustrated because we wanted to get a good start.

“There’s work to be done but everyone is positive because everyone knows we can be better and bounce back in the right manner.’’
