MORECAMBE 2-3 BURY

9 February 2019

THE Shrimps lost to the Shakers for the second time this season despite a spirited fightback in this five goal thriller at the Globe Arena.

The Shrimps trailed 3-0 on the hour mark but goals for Richie Bennett and Steven Old brought them back into the game but they cld not find the third goal needed to share the spoils.

Boss Jim Bentley made two changes to the side that drew at Northampton with Piero Mingoia coming in for his debut and Luke Conlan returning from injury as Rhys Oates dropped to the bench.

Morecambe started well and Mingoia caused issues down the right, aiming a cross at Kevin Ellison at the back post, but the towering attacker missed the ball and Bury regrouped.

Again, Mingoia aimed for Ellison from the right, the latter charging in on the ball, as he went to strike the volley he slipped and Aimson collected the ball to set his side on the attack.

The bright start came to an abrupt end on 17 minutes when Bury took the lead. After a swift break Byron Moore broke through only to be denied by Mark Halstead. The ball rebounds to Danny Mayor who kept the ball in play and was given too much space and time to curl an effort into the bottom left hand corner of the Morecambe goal from a tight angle.

Mayor went close again as he turned superbly on the edge of the box and clipped an effort wide before Nicky Maynard was denied by a fine Halstead save as he ran clear of the Morecambe defence.

Scott Wharton came close to doubling the lead in first half stoppage time from a Nicky Adams corner before the Shakers added a second in injury time.

Old had come on to replace the injured Sam Lavelle and he made an early mistake by passing back without seeing Maynard who received the ball in a good position and squared for O’Shea to finish from the edge of the area.

O’Shea doubled his tally on the hour mark when he took advantage of another fine run from Mayor to score with another smart finish.

The Shrimps’ comeback came when Richie Bennett was brought down in the box for a penalty. Joe Murphy kept Cranston’s penalty out, but the rebound fell to Bennett who lifted the ball over Murphy to give Morecambe a lifeline.

Five minutes later the Shrimps pulled another goal back when Old made up for his mistake by directing a header from Cranston’s cross beyond Murphy.

The Shrimps continued to press and Kevin Ellison had one late chance with an acrobatic volley that sailed just wide of the left hand post.
