OLDHAM ATHLETIC 1-2 MORECAMBE

19 February 2019

AARON Collins was the match-winner as he made it two goals from two games to seal a dramatic late win over Paul Scholes’s Oldham.

The new recruit was in the right place at the right time again as he slotted home Liam Mandeville's cross to give the Shrimps a second successive win and took them six points clear of the bottom two.

Boss Jim Bentley stuck with the same side that beat Port Vale at the weekend with Rhys Oates the only change on the bench.

And Morecambe made the best possible start when they took the lead after only four minutes through Jordan Cranston. A swift Shrimps attack ended with Piero Mingoia crossing from the right-hand side and Cranston turned the ball past Daniel Iversen from eight yards out.

Oldham hit back and enjoyed the greater share of the possession without proving too much of a threat.

In fact, to was the Shrimps who looked the more likely to score the game’s second goal only to be denied on several occasions buy home keeper Daniel Iversen.

Cranston forced the Leicester City loanee into a flying save with a sweetly struck free kick from 25 yards and the Oldham keeper reacted smartly again to tip away a diving header from Carlos Mendes-Gomes.

Mark Halstead then produced a fine save of his own to foil Jose Baxter's close-range effort before blocking a long-range effort from George Edmundson that took a deflection on its way to goal.

The second half saw Oldham again produce plenty of pressure but create no real chances until Baxter headed a left-wing cross past Halstead on 76 minutes to bring the home side back into the game.

Morecambe came out fighting and Mingoia tested Iversen with a stunning rift foot shot from distance before Bentley’s side had the final word.

Liam Mandeville found himself with the ball in the box and he produced a superb piece of skill to turn past two challenges before teeing up Collins to score from close range and give the visitors another vital three points.
