Kids Cup Final

24 January 2019

Community Sports' Kids Cup Final ended in a close 1-0 win for last years' winners St Peters as they progress forward to the Area Finals.

On Saturday 19th January, during half time of the Morecambe vs Stevenage game at the Globe Arena, the Final of Morecambe Community Sports' Kids Cup was taking place on the pitch.

The Kids Cup is an annual event organised by the EFL which gets all 72 football league teams to host their own tournament where schools in the local area get invited to enter their six-a-side team of under 11's.

The schools that participate have the chance of going on to represent their local football club at Wembley at the end of the season where they have the opportunity to play on the pitch during the EFL Play-Off weekend.

At this years' Kids Cup there were 21 teams that participated and after a day of competitive football was played in the tournament; we were down to our two finalists, Greatwood and St Peters.

St Peters managed to go all the way last season and win the Kids Cup competition at Wembley Stadium back in May 2018, so they would be hoping that they could repeat this again this year. During the time that the EFL has been running the Kids Cup, Morecambe FC have won it an incredible three times!

This years final was a very close game, Greatwood may have come into the game as the underdogs but they had some great opportunities to win the match. After the 10 minutes was up, the game still remained 0-0 so it had to go to Extra Time once Morecambe's game against Stevenage had finished.

Some supporters stayed to watch the rest of the game to see how it would finish. Eventually after several minutes of Extra Time had been played, St Peters managed to grab the winning goal that put them through to the next round of the competition.

It was a great effort from both teams that made for a really entertaining watch; we would just like to thank Greatwood for participating in this years event and for giving such a great effort in the competition.

St Peters will now move forward into the Area Finals which will be taking place later in March at Bolton Wanderers Academy.
