YOUNG SHRIMPS BACK IN ACTION

Fixture programme returns for Academy boys

17 January 2019

Schoolboy teams from Morecambe’s Academy return to action this weekend, following the festive break.

The youngsters range from 6 to 16, with teams in the Under 9 to Under 16 age groups competing in the EFL Academy Games Programme against other Category 3 academies in the north west.

The young Shrimps returned to training on 7th January and resume their fixture programme against Carlisle United on 20th January.  Half of the age groups will travel to Carlisle, with the remainder hosting the Cumbrians at Lancaster & Morecambe College.

Forthcoming fixtures include Accrington Stanley and Oldham Athletic, before long trips to Walsall and Shrewsbury.

The games programme is an important part of the development of the young players; as they pursue the dream of a scholarship and professional football contract.

Head of Youth Stewart Drummond said, “Age groups will have enjoyed the Christmas break but it is now back to work with the games programme back again. Testing the boys in the Sunday games is a very important part of the academy life and is the best measure of progression for the teams. With the improvement we have seen across the age groups I am sure all the teams are looking forward to the game this Sunday against Carlisle.”

Boys selected as Academy Player of the Month for November visited Globe Arena on 5th January, to enjoy the game against Crewe Alexandra and to meet members of the first team squad. The lads are pictured with Kevin Ellison.
