WALSALL GAME HUGE FOR BOTH CLUBS

16 September 2019

SHRIMPS’ boss Jim Bentley said Tuesday’s game against Walsall was “huge’’ for both clubs.

Both sides suffered defeats on Saturday and find themselves at the wrong end of the table after eight games looking for points.

Bentley admitted he was disappointed with the manner of his side’s 3-0 defeat at bottom club Scunthorpe and is looking for a reaction at the Globe Arena on Tuesday.

He said: “Saturday’s display was the sort that can get managers the sack. It was a poor showing, especially in the first half when all the damage was done.

“We were better in the second half and if we had scored from one of our chances it may have had a bit of an impact on the game but we didn’t and it was a poor defeat.

“We all know that and we find ourselves at the wrong end of the table, like Walsall which makes this a huge game.

“What we have to do is come out fighting. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves in any way because if you do that, people are ready to trample all over you.’’

Bentley said Saturday’s game highlighted just how important it was for his side to score first.

“Before Scunthorpe got the penalty I thought we were on top and had forced their keeper into a couple of saves and there was a real nervous edge about their fans.

“But goals change games and their momentum went up after they went ahead and all of a sudden they looked top-notch and that is a lesson we need to learn from and shore our defence up.’’
