MORECAMBE 2-2 NORTHAMPTON TOWN

28 September 2019

THE Shrimps came from two goals down to earn a battling point at the Globe Arena.

A goal in the 93rd minute from substitute Kevin Ellison following a leveller from Adam Buxton just after the hour saw the Shrimps rewarded for their fighting spirit after two goals from Jordan Turnbull gave the Cobblers a two goal lead at the break.

Boss Jim Bentley made four changes to the starting line up with Luke Conlan, Alex Kenyon, Shaun Miller and A-Jay Leitch-Smith recalled to the starting line up with and the latter almost gave the Shrimps a dream start after just four minutes when he was played in by Miller only for visiting goalkeeper David Cornell to make a fine save.

Morecambe continued to knock the ball around nicely but, as they have all too often in recent weeks, conceded the first goal on 21 minutes when Nicky Adams swung over a corner that was headed home by Jordan Turnbull.

The same player doubled Northampton’s lead seven minutes before half-time when he cut in from the right and let fly with a shot that took a wicked deflection off Steven Old and flat footed Barry Roche as it ended up in the bottom right hand corner of the Morecambe goal.

It was almost 3-0 moments before half-time but Andy Williams headed Nicky Adams’ cross against the top of the bar.

And the woodwork again came to Morecambe’s rescue on the hour with Adams’ producing a fine curler that came back off the underside of the bar before play came to an unscheduled halt midway through the half when the assistant referee had to leave the field with an injury.

The long break in play seemed to give the Shrimps a lift and they levelled through Buxton on 72 minutes when he beat Cornell from 25 yards with a low shot that went rough a crowd of bodies.

The Shrimps were clearly lifted by the goal with Cornell forced to save well from Leitch-Smith before the Shrimps sealed a dramatic point three minutes into the added 10.

George Tanner’s cross from the right bounced around in the box before the ball fell to Ellison who scored from close range.

There was still time for more drama with Northampton going close to winning the game with Sam Hoskins hitting the Morecambe bar for a third time before Reece Hall-Johnson missed a golden chance to seal the points when he failed to find the target from close range.
