Morecambe boss Derek Adams said his side put in a “terrific’’ performance as they beat Port Vale 2-1 at the Globe Arena.
First-half goals from Steven Old and Cole Stockton gave the Shrimps a great platform and despite a late comeback from Port Vale that saw a goal from James Gibbons, Derek Adams' side held on for a fifth league win of the season.
Adams was particularly pleased to see his side score the first goal of the game for the first time since he took over as boss.
He said: “We passed the ball really well in the first half in difficult conditions and it was great that we got the first goal of the game which is something we haven’t done enough this season.
“Scoring the first goal was great, it makes such a difference in games in this league.
“We’ve gone behind at times, had to chase the game and shown great character, but tonight was a terrific performance.
“I think we played a lot of good football in and around the midfield and forward areas.
“It was a very good win for us and a vital three points that allowed us to open up a bit of a gap between ourselves and Stevenage.
“We started the game well with two early goals and gained in confidence from then and carried on the good performance we gave on Saturday.
“They came back into it in the second half and when they scored with 19 minutes to go there were a few nerves. But we stayed resolute and I was really pleased that we held on for the points.''
