DEREK ADAMS | We worked to a game plan

4 October 2020

Shrimps boss, Derek Adams has praised his players for carrying out a game plan against Port Vale at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Shrimps leapfrogged Vale in the league two table to move into second place. Port Vale were unbeaten in all competitions this season so Derek Adams was pleased with his side's organisation.

"We worked to a game plan, which paid off in the end," said Adams.

"We allowed Port Vale to have the ball in their half, but once they passed forward we would be ready to win it back and that's how the game panned out.

"We dealt well with the threat of Joyce, who has done really well for them this season. Cole Stockton did really well, taking care of him and defensively we limited them to long balls and very few shots on our goal.

"We were unlucky to come in 0-0 at half time, Aaron Wildig and Carlos Mendes Gomes worked a short corner between them, Carlos made a turn and Cole Stockton put the ball across past the post.

"Second half we nearly got the opening goal straight away. We got in on the counter-attack with good play from Aaron Wildig, John O'Sullivan and Adam Phillips deciding between them who would try and get that goal. John left it for Adam to have the shot and the goalkeeper's made a fantastic save.

"We got the penalty kick later in the game, Cole does well to use his strength. It's probably a little naive from their defender to nudge him in the back in that area of the pitch and Adam Phillips did extremely well with the penalty kick.

"The players did well today, they played to shape, they made it hard for Port Vale and nullified their strengths."
