GRIMSBY TOWN 0-3 MORECAMBE

20 April 2021

Morecambe made it three wins from three with a fine away performance at Grimsby Town to maintain the automatic promotion push.

First half goals from Cole Stockton and Yann Songo’o and a late own goal from Luke Waterfall gave the Shrimps the three points to keep them in fourth place in the table just one point behind Saturday’s opponents Bolton Wanderers.

Shrimps boss Derek Adams made one change to the side that beat Oldham Athletic on Saturday with Freddie Price handed his full league debut in place of the injured John O’Sullivan.

The Shrimps carried on from where they left off on Saturday with Cole Stockton forcing James McKeown into a good save after just two minutes.

Grimsby, who had lost just one of their last 10 games, threatened themselves shortly afterwards when Lenell John-Lewis lobbed the ball just over the bar with a clever effort.

Grimsby continued to look to use the height and experience of John-Lewis and James Hanson but Sam Lavelle and Nat Knight-Percival proved up to the physical challenge.

The Shrimps scored the all important first goal through Stockton on 22 minutes. Aaron Wildig played him in down the left hand side and the striker produced a fine finish.

The Shrimps added a second six minutes later when Wildig delivered inswinging cross that was eventually turned into the net by Songo’o.

Grimsby hit back with John-Lewis who was denied by a superb save from Kyle Letheren.

The Shrimps almost added a third on 47 minutes when Stockton latched on to another long ball and beat the advancing McKeown only to see his effort superbly cleared off the line by Rollin Menayese at full stretch.

Grimsby then created a series of chances with Jay Matete shooting wide and John-Lewis forcing another fine save from Letheren at his near post before the same player deflected an effort inches the wrong of the left hand post.

The Shrimps added to Grimsby’s frustrations by scoring a third to secure the win nine minutes from time when Ryan Cooney’s right wing cross was turned into his own net by Luke Waterfall.

Stephen Hendrie went close to making it 4-0 in the closing stages with a long range lob that just cleared the crossbar as the Shrimps ended the game on the front foot.
