Morecambe bounced back to winning ways with a fine 4-1 victory over Scunthorpe United at the Mazuma Stadium.
First-half goals from Cole Stockton and Carlos Mendes Gomes gave the Shrimps a solid platform with second half strikes from Sam Lavelle and Yann Songo’o completing a fine win with the only downside being a late consolation goal by Alfie Beestin for the visitors.
Boss Derek Adams made two changes from from the side beaten by Port Vale with Kelvin Mellor and Toumani Diagouraga returning for Ryan Cooney and Brad Lyons.
The Shrimps started well and went close in the fourth minute when the excellent John O’Sullivan forced a fine save from Scunthorpe keeper Rory Watson after neat shot on the turn.
Watson was called upon again when he tipped over an cross come shot from Mendes Gomes that was dipping just under the crossbar.
The Shrimps finally broke the deadlock on 25 minutes with a superb 20 yard strike from Stockton after O’Sullivan won possession in midfield and teed up his team mate.
On 37 minutes Morecambe doubled their advantage with another well worked goal. The ever alert O’Sullivan cut in from the right and found Mendes Gomes, whose touch took him away from Jacob Bedeau before he slotted the ball under Watson for his 13th goal of the season.
The Shrimps made it 3-0 on 49 minutes O’Sullivan’s corner was headed home by Lavelle.
Morecambe made it 4-0 on the hour with a quality strike. Aaron Wildig played a quick free-kick in behind the defence for Mendes Gomes, whose cross was turned in by Songo’o at the far post from close range.
Scunthorpe hit back with Letheren sacking from Kevin van Veen and then brilliantly tipping over a George Taft effort after the Iron saw a shot hit the crossbar.
Scunthorpe did find a consolation seven minutes from time when Beestin scored from close range after his initial effort had again been saved by Letheren.
