Cooney enjoying step up to Sky Bet League One

15 August 2021

Defender Ryan Cooney says he is enjoying his football and the step up to Sky Bet League One.

Conney, who was awarded the sponsors Man of the Match against Shrewsbury Town at the weekend, was part of a backline that managed to keep a clean sheet against the Salop, and the 21-year-old was delighted with the whole team's performance.

“I thought I played alright but I thought everyone in the team did to be honest, you have seen how we have played in the last two games away from home, so I was delighted that we could give the fans a similar performance,” he said.

“I am really enjoying my football at the minute, it is another challenge and a bigger one than last season.

“It is a division that provides good competition and when I do play, I enjoy the style of football that we try to play, the high intensity pressing and at the end of the day, you always enjoy playing football.

The Shrimps host Rotherham United on Tuesday night looking to build on their four points from the first two league games, and Conney says picking up three points against the Millers would be another stepping stone in the season.

He added: "Picking up the three points is a good momentum boost for us going into Tuesday night’s game against Rotherham United.

“We just take that as another game, another three points up for grabs, which can be another stepping stone in the season.

“I don’t think we will get too far ahead of ourselves, it is only two games into the new season, we just have to keep going, everyone saw it last season, we kept the concentration and you saw what happened.”
