Delaney looking to push on after strong start

29 August 2021

Defender Ryan Delaney says Morecambe’s start to life in Sky Bet League One will give them a platform to build on throughout the season.

The Shrimps overcame a strong Sheffield Wednesday side on Saturday afternoon in front of a record-breaking attendance at the Mazuma Stadium.

A second-half own goal proved the difference between the two sides, and Delaney is hoping the side can push on from here.

“It’s a very good start,” he said.

“It’s given us a good platform going into the rest of the season, but we’ve got to take it with a pinch of salt.

“Don’t get too high with the high’s and don’t get too low with the low’s, it’s going to be a long season, but we’ve started well, and I think it’s been good for us and we can keep going from here, keep pushing on.”

Having conceded zero goals in the build-up to Saturday’s clash, and as a result of sitting at the top of the table, the Owls were overwhelming favourites, however the win came as no surprise to Delaney given the quality in this Morecambe side.

He added: “[It was a] massive win.

“I think in the grand scheme of things, we did really well.

“The boys defended really well, and we knew that, if an opportunity arises, we’ve got enough quality in this squad to score goals.”

The 24-year-old featured for only the second time this season after getting injured on the opening day at Ipswich Town and admits it’s great to be back.

“I was itching to get out there in the last few weeks after obviously getting a knock in the first game,” Delaney continued.

“I’ve just been doing as much as I can off the pitch just to make sure I was ready if I was given an opportunity like today.

“I’m feeling good and just looking forward to the rest of the season and hope to stake a claim in the starting eleven.”
