Manager Stephen Robinson credits team spirit before season opener

6 August 2021

Shrimps boss Stephen Robinson is hoping that his squad depth will help him out throughout the season, as the team prepare for their first Sky Bet League One fixture of the season against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

As well as offering new deals to five existing players, Robinson, has recruited 14 new players since joining the club 61 days ago.

From his first day at the Mazuma Stadium, the former Motherwell chief always intended to bring in two players for every position to really bolster the strength and depth of the squad, a target which will suit the team nicely going into League One.

“There can’t be guarantees in football, who plays well in the staff’s opinion will play,” said Robinson.

“There’s no favourites, there’s none of that, contrary to what some people think sometimes, I pick a team to win football matches and we’ll do that.

“There’s a real competition, there’s a really good spirit in the camp, everybody knows they’re fighting for a place.

“People will be disappointed not to start but it’s a long, long season.”

Robinson, who picked up the Scottish Premiership Manager of the Month in February 2019 whilst at Fir Park, is looking forward to seeing his Shrimps side go toe-to-toe with several big clubs this season.

“People keep telling me what a strong year it is this year, but that’s what we want to be a part of,” he added.

“We’ve earned the right to be in this division, big clubs, big crowds, big names so we’re very much looking forward to it.”
