McDonald relishing Blackburn Rovers test

10 August 2021

The Shrimps’ midfielder is looking forward to a tough game against the East Lancashire side.

Morecambe’s Carabao Cup campaign kicks off in the first round against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in what will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs.

The hosts head into the game on the back of an opening day victory at home to Swansea City last Saturday, and whilst Shrimps’ midfielder Wes McDonald is expecting a tough match, it’s one, he believes, the team can look forward to.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game of course,” McDonald said.

“Playing a big side like Blackburn, a big club, a Championship side, so we know it’s going to be tough but we’re relishing the game and we can’t wait to get on the field.

“It’s going to be a good game, obviously us being the underdogs, we’re going to go there and give a good account of ourselves.”

McDonald’s competitive debut for the Shrimps came in last weekend’s 2-2 draw away to Ipswich Town, and the 24-year-old believes the team can take confidence from that performance heading into the cup tie.

“I feel that everybody saw what we can do in that game, I feel we were unlucky not to get the three points, but the group is buzzing and we’ve a lot a confidence, definitely,” he said.

“They’ve got a lot of quality in their side, they’re a good possession-based team, a good attacking threat so it’s going to be a good game, but we go into every game looking to win.

“We’ve got good players, we’ve got good strength in depth in the squad as well so yeah definitely, we’re just looking to show that on the field.”

The former Walsall man has three EFL Cup appearances to-date, and based on the club’s cup successes last season, he’s hoping to impress the fans this time around.

“It’s a massive boost having the fans back, especially for myself, I love playing in front of the fans,” McDonald added.

“Obviously last season there was no fans, but this season, it’s going to be great, just hearing them, the atmosphere, it’s going to be good and we’re going to go there looking to win.”
