Morecambe 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday
Sky Bet League One
The Mazuma Stadium
Saturday 28 August 2021
Kick-off: 3:00pm
Attendance: 5,481 (1,776 away)

The Shrimps walked away with three points on home soil after sealing a 1-0 win over much fancied Sheffield Wednesday, in-front of record breaking attendance at the Mazuma Stadium.

An own goal from Dennis Adeniran was the difference as 5,481 fans made their voice heard as Stephen Robinson’s men sealed their second win of the Sky Bet League One season.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts after Shane McLouglin was fouled by George Byers, 20-yards from goal.

Striker Cole Stockton decided he was the man for job, and expertly guided his set-piece under the Wednesday wall, but goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell was equal to his effort.

On the 14th minute, a tremendous sliding tackle from Sam Lavelle ensured that the scores remained level, thwarting Lee Gregory.

The visitors came again five minutes later, as Jaden Brown’s effort flashed across Jokull Andresson’s goalmouth, luckily for the home side there was no one there to apply the finishing touch.

The Owls were pressing for an opener and came close on the 26th minute, a cross from Jack Hunt ended up striking the crossbar before going out for a goal-kick.

Just before the half-time whistle, Gregory had a golden chance to send Darren Moore’s men in a goal-up at the break, but the striker could not glance his header on target.

Half-time: Morecambe 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Four minutes after the break, Wednesday came close again. This time an effort from George Byers  rattled the right post of Andresson’s goal.

On the 53rd minute, the Owls were in again, a through ball found Brown who had continued his darting run into the box, but an outstanding one-on-one save from Andresson kept the scores on level terms.

It was starting to turn into the Andresson show as the big man from Iceland was at it again just moments later, a fantastic save from the keeper denied Gregory his third goal of the season.

However, that Wednesday pressure would be in vein as Stephen Robinson’s men opened the scoring just after the hour mark.

An in-swinging corner from Adam Phillips cannoned off Adeniran and into his own net, a huge goal roared home by a record attendance at the Mazuma Stadium.

With the minutes ticking down, two efforts from Stockton and Gnahoua could not find the mark.

An unbelievable day in-front of a record crowd at the Mazuma Stadium, Saturday’s don’t get much better than that.
