U18s Report: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Morecambe

12 August 2021

The Shrimps U18 side fall to narrow defeat at the hands of Wigan Athletic in the Guestline Professional Youth Cup Final at the County Ground, Leyland.

In what was a very wet afternoon down at the County Ground for the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup Final, it was the Latics that narrowly edged out the Shrimps to cup glory.

The game itself had been a long time coming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the game itself didn’t disappoint with both sets of players doing themselves proud.

Both sides had good chances in the first half, Adam Mayor a particular threat for Morecambe down the left hand side, but it was Wigan who took the lead midway through the first half as when the young Shrimps needlessly gave away a corner which was punished with a powerful header to fire the Latics into a 1-0 lead.

The scoreline stayed that way until half time and, although Morecambe kept the ball much better in the second half, they couldn’t quite find the breakthrough.

Wigan pretty much sealed the result with ten minutes left, a superb finish from outside the box after the Shrimps gave the ball away in a defensive area.

Despite the setback, the lads kept going and managed to find a consolation goal through Ben Jones after an effective high press.

Jones' goal would've undoubtedly given the Shrimps the lift they needed in order to try and find a late equaliser, but no sooner was the ball picked up and carried back to the centre circle did the referee blow the final whistle.

All at Morecambe Football Club congratulations our opponents Wigan Athletic on their victory, and perhaps, in what was a tight affair, the result could well have gone in Morecambe's favour on another day.

The Shrimps' U18s now look forward to the start of the Youth Alliance campaign this week.
