Stockton praises Shrimps’ application

4 December 2021

Match winner Cole Stockton says he was pleased with how Morecambe went about their business against Buxton in the Second Round of the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old netted his 16th goal of the campaign in all competitions after timing his run to perfection to beat the offside trap before slotting beyond Theo Richardson in the home goal.

Following the victory, Stockton said it feels good to leave The Tarmac Silverlands Stadium with a place in the Third Round draw given how difficult of a place it was to play.

“It was massive,” he said.

“Obviously missing last week as well, then coming back here, it was just nice we did the job, we applied ourselves in the right way and then come away into the next round.

“They were a very good side, they knew what they were doing, we knew their strengths as well and, like I said, I can’t emphasise enough how we applied ourselves right and took it onto the pitch.

“I could’ve had a couple more as well, it’s just lack of concentration, and I’m getting the chances so I’m pleased with that, but no it was nice to score as well.

“If you said to me at the start of the season ‘this is where you’d be’ then I probably would’ve laughed at you, but I’m delighted, and I’ve got to keep going.”

Nearly 12 months on from playing Chelsea in last year’s Third Round, the Shrimps again find themselves in the hat for the same stage of competition, and Stockton is hoping for a similar draw.

He added: “We’re just hoping for a good draw now into the next one, hopefully a big team away.

“They’re incredible days out as well, and now we’ll have the fans back in, so fingers crossed."
