BARROW 1-2 MORECAMBE

20 February 2021

Morecambe moved up to fourth in the table with a good win at Barrow.

The Shrimps sealed their double over Barrow with Kelvin Mellor’s 66th minute strike earning the points to take Morecambe back into the play-off spots.

Boss Derek Adams selected the same team that lost at Bradford on Tuesday and his side started the game on the front foot with Aaron Wildig clipping an effort wide of the target on seven minutes after finding space in the box.

Cole Stockton then fired a free kick just wide of the right hand post from 25 yards before the Shrimps almost took the lead on 23 minutes.

Carlos Mendes Gomes drilled a low free kick from 25 yards under the Barrow wall and against the post and and the rebound fell to Stockton whose effort was well saved by Joel Dixon.

The Shrimps did manage to find the target a minute later as the produced a well worked goal.

Stockton produced an inviting cross to the far post with the outside of his right foot and Wildig took advantage with a close range header for his sixth goal of the season.

The Shrimps had a chance to double their lead just before the half hour when Stockton was played in on goal but the ball ran away from him in the wind and Dixon was able to save at his feet.

Barrow hit back with their only effort of note in the first period as James Jones headed a corner wide but the Shrimps were soon looking the more threatening again after the break with Stockton and Wildig testing Dixon before the home keeper produced an excellent save to foil Mendes Gomes’ close range effort.

As the Shrimps failed to hammer home their advantage Barrow came back into the game.

Shrimps’ keeper Kyle Letheren made a superb save to tip a shot from Josh Kay against the post. But Letheren was left helpless as the home side levelled after some poor defending.

A cross from the left was cleared by Liam Gibson straight into the path of Scott Quigley and the striker made no mistake with a cool finish from 12 yards out.

To their credit the Shrimps hit back and took the lead within 90 seconds.

Stockton was again the provider with a neat through ball for Kelvin Mellor who had raced into the box and finished smartly past Dixon from the angle.

Barrow pushed bodies forward but were restricted to just one half chance when Luke James turned smartly in the box but could only shoot weakly at the Morecambe goal and Letheren saved easily.
