MATCH REPORT | Kendal Town 1-4 Morecambe

27 July 2021

Goals from new signings Jonah Ayunga and Adam Phillips as well as an Adam Mayor strike proved decisive in the Shrimps’ penultimate pre-season friendly.

Ayunga scored twice in an impressive debut with Phillips, who signed earlier in the day, marking his third loan spell with a neat goal.

The Shrimps took the lead through Ayunga in the 13th minute, and it was the new signing who won the penalty after being brought down in the box and he made no mistake from the spot.

Morecambe continued to pile on the pressure with Ayunga being denied a second by a fine save from the home keeper who also denied Greg Leigh before the Shrimps added a second on 31 minutes.

Shane McLoughlin produced a pinpoint through ball for Phillips who controlled it superbly on his chest before bringing it down and slotting past the goalkeeper.

Ayunga made it 3-0 on 38 minutes with his second of the night, this time the striker met Leigh’s cross from the right and powerfully headed the ball home.

The Shrimps made it 4-0 just after the hour when academy youngster Adam Mayor latched onto a long through ball and stayed calm to stoke the ball into the right-hand corner of the Kendal goal.

The home side pulled a goal back on 83 minutes with a neat finish from a trialist at the second time of asking after a fine initial save by Jökull Andrésson, but it proved only a consolation as the Shrimps ran out comfortable 1-4 winners.

Morecambe: Andresson, Mellor (rep Barrett 70), Mensah, Pye, Leigh (rep Connolly 58), Mayor rep Chiduku 70), Phillips (rep Rooney 58), Jones, McLoughlin, Price, Ayunga (rep Sample 58)
