MATCH REPORT | Morecambe 1-1 Blackpool

31 July 2021

Morecambe ended their pre-season campaign with an entertaining draw against Sky Bet Championship side Blackpool.

Stephen Robinson's side produced some excellent football in a well contested game and took the lead through Wes McDonald in the first half before C J Hamilton earned a share of the spoils with a leveller after the break.

The visitors enjoyed the greater share of possession in the opening stages with Anthony O'Connor forced to make a vital early clearance to stop a right wing cross from reaching Jerry Yates.

Blackpool's first effort of note came on 17 minutes when Reece James cut inside from the right and fired a well struck shot that was well saved by Kyle Letheren.

After soaking up the early pressure, the Shrimps took the lead on 23 minutes with a well worked goal which saw Ryan Cooney feed Arthur Gnahoua down the right and his low cross was converted by McDonald who produced a clinical close range finish.

Blackpool hit back with Yates and Keshi Anderson firing efforts off target before Jonah Ayunga fizzed an effort inches over after turning past his marker on the edge of the box.

Blackpool levelled nine minutes after the break when the ball broke free in the middle of the park for substitute Josh Bowler who teed up Keshi Anderson whose thunderous shot hit the underside of the crossbar before being forced over the line by Hamilton.

In an entertaining game where both sides made wholesale changes, the chances continued at both ends.

Luke Garbutt twice produced efforts that Jokull Andresson did well to save, while at the other end, Aaron Wildig saw a header from Greg Leigh's cross blocked by Chris Maxwell and a second effort being well cleared by Callum Connolly.

The Shrimps had a glorious chance to win it in the last minute when Cole Stockton played in Adam Phillips for a free run on goal only to see his effort superbly saved by Maxwell.
