Skipper Anthony O’Connor has praised the Shrimps’ display following a 2-1 win in the Lancashire derby at Fleetwood Town.
Callum Jones fired Morecambe into the lead on 11 minutes after a terrific free kick and it took until 82 minutes for the hosts to respond which they did through a Callum Johnson header.
Despite conceding late, leading scorer Cole Stockton stepped up with yet another contender for Goal of the Season, this time a pinpoint strike from the halfway line to guarantee all three points for Stephen Robinson’s men.
Captain O’Connor says it was a solid performance from the entire squad, from the first minute to the last.
“We put in a really good away performance,” he said.
“To go a goal up, Callum [Jones] scored a great free kick, we defended really well, the goal that they scored was a suckerpunch and I’m guessing everyone’s thoughts then were ‘here we go again, it just shows the character in the team.”
On Stockton’s 94th minute winner, he added: “It’s an unbelievable wonder goal, I was thinking ‘just take a draw’, I was thinking because it looks like we’re not going to win it, a point away from home is not the worst thing.
“Cole [Stockton] comes up with that, it’s unbelievable, we got some bodies back today from injury which always helps, so the squad is looking stronger, there’s competition for places and today was a really good away performance.”
After picking up a first league win since late September, the skipper has called for consistency going forwards.
O’Connor continued: “Hopefully that can be the start of a bit of a run for us, we don’t get carried away, of course not.
“We’ve shown before that you can win, and you can beat anybody and you can lose just as easily but it’s important now that we try and stay on that even keel.
“We can’t be constantly up and down, we’ve got to just try and keep that consistency.”
