Wycombe Wanderers 4-3 Morecambe
Sky Bet League One
Adams Park
Saturday 2 October 2021
Kick-Off: 3:00pm

Another wild game in Sky Bet League One sees the Shrimps on the wrong side of a 4-3 defeat against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Two goals in the first half from Alfie McCalmont and Adam Phillips gave the visitors the lead at the break, however two goals in three minutes from Daryl Horgan and Sam Vokes levelled the affair up.

The Chairboys went onto take the lead through a Joe Jacobson direct corner before substitute Jonah Ayunga made the scoreline 3-3 on a wet afternoon in Buckinghamshire.

A late strike form Curtis Thompson sunk the Shrimps on an afternoon that could have been so different for Stephen Robinson’s side.

The first chance of the game came on the fourth minute of the game, with the Shrimps opening the scoring.

A flowed free-kick into the penalty area from Phillips was initially cleared by the Chairboys defence, before a calm and composed finish from McCalmont saw him slide the ball past a stranded David Stockdale.

Stephen Robinson’s men came close to adding a second just after the 15th minute mark, a sloppy clearance from Stockdale gave Arthur Gnahoua the ball - he in turned laid the ball to Phillips who took aim at goal, but a smart save from Stockdale atoned for his error.

Four minutes before the half hour mark, the visitors did double their lead.

A long ball up-field was taken down superbly by Cole Stockton who managed to find a bit of space before turning and floating a lovely ball into the penalty area, where the advancing Phillips was there to fire home on the volley.

The first chance of the game for the hosts came five minutes before the break, a free-kick from Jacobson was whipped into the box, but former Welsh international Vokes could not direct his header on goal.

The Shrimps forced another good save from Stockdale in the Wycombe goal, this time Liam Gibson, who was up from the back, drilling the ball hard and low, but the ‘keeper was equal to it on this occasion.

Half-time: Wycombe Wanderers 0-2 Morecambe

A spirited opening five minutes of the second half saw the Chairboys claw a goal back. Horgan took a shot from 25-yards and the ball, skipping up off the greasy surface, beat Kyle Letheren in the Shrimps' goal.

Moments later, the hosts were on level terms.

A ball from the right hand side was met perfectly by the head of Vokes, sending his effort into the bottom left corner of the Shrimps’ goal.

On the 58th minute, Robinson’s side came close to adding their third and regaining the lead, Gibson found himself up from the back and swung a delivery into the mix which was headed just over the bar by Ryan Delaney.

The hosts took the lead on the 73rd minute, as Jacobson scored direct from a corner, something he is very well renowned for.

After that goal, manager Stephen Robinson was sent off by referee Tom Reeves for his protests after the Chairboys' third goal.

The visitors were not down and out however, substitute Ayunga who came onto replace Gnahoua made an instant impact with 10 minutes of the game remaining.

Ayunga did well to hold off his defender before unleashing a left-footed effort which looped up and over Stockdale and into the top-left of his goal.

There was still time for one more twist in the tail, after a long punt down field from Stockdale, the ball fell to Thompson who lashed his effort home, handing Wycombe the three points.
