McDonald relishing Lancashire derby

24 September 2021

Winger Wes McDonald says the Shrimps are looking to put on a show for the fans in Saturday’s Sky Bet League One Lancashire derby.

Stephen Robinson’s men face off against Accrington Stanley in the first competitive meeting between the two sides since March 2018, and the first ever in League One.

Ahead of the derby, midfielder McDonald says the team will look to repay the fans’ support with a strong display at the Mazuma.

“Everybody’s been saying that it’s going to be a great atmosphere,” he said.

“We’re definitely looking to put on a show for the fans.

“When you’re in a derby game, it’s a lot more intense in a way, tackles are flying in, there’s a bit more on the line.

“The fans want to get three points, bragging rights, so the lads definitely know that, and we just want to keep building game by game and try to get as many points on the board as possible.”

The Shrimps head into Saturday’s game on the back of an impressive victory away at Crewe Alexandra, and McDonald is hoping the reds can push on from Tuesday’s solid display.

The 24-year-old said: “Obviously a big three points away from home, we’re delighted for that, and we’re just looking forward to the next game.

“We’ve got some great players here, every game we just want to keep going, game by game, doing as best as we can, getting points on the board.

“I’ve been coming into the side for a couple of games now, so I’m just trying to build on every game and keep improving.”
