Stockton aware of AFC Wimbledon threats

10 September 2021

August’s Sky Bet League One Player of the Month Cole Stockton says the Shrimps can expect a strong opposition in the Dons on Saturday.

The Shrimps return to action at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday 11 September in Sky Bet League One with AFC Wimbledon the visitors.

After a strong opening five league games which saw Stephen Robinson’s men pick up victories against the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Shrewsbury Town, the 27-year-old is expecting another tough game against the London side.

“We’ve watched games on them,” he said.

“They’re a good team with a good setup, so we’ll be aware of their threats as well, each game is different, you’ve just got to try and suss out their weaknesses and then just stick to what I do.

“It’s been incredible [the team’s start to the season], but we go back to Ipswich, we would’ve taken a point before the game, obviously it was a kick in the teeth conceding last minute but like I say, we’ve had a very good start.”

Reflecting on the games played so far, Stockton believes a key factor in his strong start to the campaign is the return of crowds to stadiums, both home and away, admitting he thrives on the presence of fans.

Stockton added: “I love it, especially having our fans back at our place.

“Even the away games when you’re getting a little bit of stick, it’s all part of it and the fans make the game, they do.

“Walking out in front of them, home or away, always gives you that little bit of adrenaline.”

The clash with the Dons comes after a rare international break for the Shrimps, and leading-goal scorer Stockton admits whilst the side will undoubtedly benefit from a rest, it’s good to have the group back together.

“It’s been nice, it has,” he added.

“I’ve had a little bit of downtime at home with the family, just doing the odd bits, but we’ve had a few lads away now who’ve been with their countries but it’s nice to have everyone back now and then get back to it.”
