Striker Cole Stockton has claimed August’s Goal of the Month award, sponsored by Morecambe Eats, following his impressive opening day finish against Ipswich Town.
With over 67% of the vote, the 27-year-old’s brilliant solo effort against the Tractor Boys proved the overwhelming favourite out of a number of excellent goals.
“I’m delighted with it,” Stockton said.
“I’ve took it [the ball] off him [Arthur Gnahoua], their back four just kept backing off me, just giving me that space and I was looking to get a shot off.
“I thought the bodies are there so I just lifted my head up and I was in the box so I just got my body in and once I knew the keeper was there, I got my shot off and it’s hit the goal.”
“As a whole as well, it’s nice to get off the mark in the first game of the season and I scored two important goals.
“It’s massive to get that off your shoulder and get the first goal out the way, any striker is the same, and just in front of goal, I do feel very confident, yeah I’m still going to miss chances, but I’ll back myself on all of them.
“The goals wouldn’t have come without the team which I’m massively grateful for as well.
“As a forward, you get judged on goals, and I’m happy to get a few so far.”
The prolific number nine admits that scoring so early into the season has given him confidence looking ahead.
He added: “I do believe in myself.
“In the past, I’ve been at teams where it’s been a bit like ugh, but I look back at that now and I just feel like a completely different person.
“I’m a lot more mature as in on and off the pitch, I know what it actually means, I know what type of player I am and once I know that, that’s half the battle for me.”
