Bedeau hails togetherness despite Cambridge defeat

9 April 2022

Jacob Bedeau says, irrespective of this afternoon’s loss, the togetherness within the Shrimps’ camp could help the Club avoid relegation.

The hosts took the lead three minutes before the break following Sam Smith’s close-range strike, before a world class Cole Stockton volley levelled proceedings 23 minutes into the second half.

Moments later, the referee awarded the U’s a controversial penalty after Harvey Knibbs took a tumble in the box, and Joe Irornside made no mistake from 12 yards, sending the ball down the middle of Trevor Carson’s goal.

Despite leaving Cambridge empty handed, Bedeau feels the togetherness of the squad could prove vital in avoiding the drop.

“Today we lost the game, but everyone’s together and if everyone’s together, we’ve got a good chance,” he said.

“I think we’ve got a solid team; we had a bad week before the international break, but we’ve regrouped and I think we’re really together at the moment.

“It’s a disappointing result, but I think come the start of the week if you’d have said we’d have two wins out of those three games, we’d have snapped your hand off probably.

“We’ve got to just stay positive, go into Charlton and Portsmouth at home, and any home game for us is massive because of the crowd there, the support we get.

“Charlton away, it’ll be similar to this [Cambridge] probably, and we’ve just got to stay positive.”

Stockton’s equaliser, a thunderous volley from 25 yards out, impressed all inside the Abbey Stadium including Bedeau, who praised the striker for another sensational strike.

He continued: “It’s one to add to his collection this season, I was right behind it, and it was a very nice finish.

“He’s got that in him, on the volley, on the floor, whatever, however it comes into him, he’s obviously a class striker with the amount of goals he’s scored this season and hopefully he’ll have a big part to play in the run-in.

“I think we’d have had a great chance of winning, or at least taking something from the game because they didn’t create many chances.

“They had the ball around our box a lot, but they didn’t create any clear-cut ones, so the penalty is disappointing obviously.

“I think the referee gave it very quickly, but we’ve just got to go again, and just stay positive, keep backing each other and keep going.”
