Adams looking forward to first Lancashire derby of the season

12 August 2022

Derek Adams says the Shrimps are looking forward to the local derby against Fleetwood Town on Saturday, but that he knows how difficult the task will be.

Scott Brown’s men have won their last two games against Plymouth Argyle in Sky Bet League One and Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup respectively, and Adams admits it will be a tough game for his side but know the Shrimps can cause the Cod Army problems.

“We’re looking forward to the game because it’s a local derby and Fleetwood have come off a win against Wigan and that’s a great victory for them. They obviously beat [Plymouth] Argyle last week so we know how difficult a task it is,” he said.

“They’ve got some really good players, they’ve strengthened their team in the summer, they’ve got a new manager.

“They play in a way which can be expansive at times. They push the full-backs forward so we understand that and we have to deal with that threat, but in that we always know from our players that we’ve got a threat going forward as well and can punish teams.”

The Morecambe boss hopes more supporters will be encouraged to come to the match on Saturday, following Tuesday night’s impressive victory on penalties against Stoke City in the Carabao Cup.

“That’s what you’re hopeful of. We’ve obviously increased our season ticket sales from last year which is great. The more walk-ups we can have is beneficial for us,” he added

“All the money that comes in is beneficial to the Football Club at this time because we are trying to strengthen and move forward.

“I’m sure they’ll be a bumper crowd on Saturday. I think the weather is supposed to be very hot again and the players are really looking forward to it.”
