Match preview: Rotherham United v Morecambe

23 August 2022

Morecambe return to Carabao Cup action on Tuesday 23 August when they travel to Rotherham United in Round Two of the competition.

The Shrimps head into the game after picking up a point on the road against Oxford United on Saturday, Jensen Weir fired Morecambe ahead with his first goal for the Club, but it was cancelled out eight minutes later by Kyle Joseph.

Morecambe have faced Rotherham a total of 17 times since 1979. The Shrimps have won five of those encounters and four have ended in a draw. Last season, The Millers, who went on to win promotion after securing a second-place finish, did the double over Morecambe.

The opposition

Rotherham United are enjoying an unbeaten start to the 2022/23 campaign. Paul Warne’s side have won one game in the Championship and have drawn the other three. The Millers beat Port Vale 2-1 away from home in the opening round of the Carabao Cup to advance to Round Two of the competition.

Warne has been in charge at the AESSEAL New York Stadium since 2017. During that time, he has guided the club to promotion to the Championship on two occasions, and last season, he also lifted the EFL Trophy.

The 49-year-old had two spells with the Millers as a player. In his first, between 1999-200, Warne made over 200 appearances for the club before rejoining in 2009 after spells with Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town. Upon his retirement in 2012, Warne joined the coaching staff at the club and took over as caretaker boss in November 2016 before being appointed manager on a permanent basis the following January.

Key players

25-year-old Chiedozie Ogbene is already off the mark with four goals so far this season. The winger, who is a Republic of Ireland international, joined the club in August 2019 from Brentford.

Captain Richard Wood has made over 200 appearances for United. The 37-year-old came through the academy at Sheffield Wednesday and went on the play for Coventry City and Charlton Athletic before returning to South Yorkshire in 2014 when he signed for the Millers. Since signing for the Club, Wood has netted on 19 occassions and provided nine assists.

New arrival Brooke Norton-Cuffy has joined the Millers on loan from Arsenal. The 18-year-old defender spent time on loan at Lincoln City at the beginning of 2022 and has represented England at U16, U18 and U19 level. Despite his young age, Norton-Cuffy has played over 50 professional appearances to-date.

Shrimps’ pre-match thoughts

Derek Adams says his side will go to South Yorkshire with the team spirit and attitude they showed on Saturday.

“They are a very good side, they are in the Championship and they are on a good unbeaten run,” he said.

“They will change a good number of their squad to give other game time, like they did against Port Vale in the round before.

“We will assess them, we will go there with the team spirit and the attitude that we had on Saturday, that will give us the opportunity to progress to the next round."

Meet the officials

Peter Wright will be the man in the middle on Tuesday night. The Merseyside-based official will be assessed by linesmen Stephen Wade and Richard Wigglesworth along with fourth official James Oldham.

Wright has taken charge of four games so far this season, and has awarded 11 yellow cards with no red cards.

The last Shrimps game where Wright took charge was the 1-1 home draw against Gillingham back in February 2022.
