Report | Port Vale 1 Morecambe 0

26 December 2022

Morecambe left Vale Park on Boxing Day with nothing to show for their efforts in a 1-0 loss.

Despite a bright start for the Shrimps, Gavin Massey's long-range effort just before half-time was the difference.

Morecambe were looking the likelier of the two sides early on to break the deadlock, having large spells of possession in the final third, and testing the goalkeeper on several occasions.

Jensen Weir hit the side netting with a good effort on 20 minutes following some impressive build up play from the Shrimps, but his effort went just wide.

Ellis Harrison was looking impressive for the hosts early on, and had an effort on Connor Ripley's goal half and hour in, but the Shrimps' goalkeeper was there to latch on to the tame effort.

With five minutes of the first half remaining, Morecambe went from thinking they'd taken a deserved lead to going behind in a matter of seconds. Max Melbourne struck the post with a looping header following a cross from the right, only for Port Vale to race down the other end and score through Gavin Massey's long-range effort, which ultimately was the difference at the half-time interval.

Half-time: Port Vale 1 Morecambe 0
Derek Adams made no changes at the break, as the Shrimps made that push for the all-important equaliser.

Gavin Massey was proving a threat for Morecambe, though, as he came close to his and Port Vale's second of the game 15 minutes into the second half, firing a shot just over Connor Ripley's goal from distance.

The Shrimps were battling hard to make the break through, with Cole Stockton and Caleb Watts brought on as the half went on to add more firepower up top. Adam Mayor did come close late on, firing a shot on goal from outside the area which was tipped behind by the goalkeeper, with the eventual corner coming to nothing.

Despite their best efforts, Morecambe were left to rue their missed chances and left Vale Park with no points to add to the board.
