Diagouraga hails squad character after Doncaster comeback

2 January 2022

Toumani Diagouraga has praised the character of the Shrimps squad after overturning a 3-0 deficit to beat Doncaster Rovers 4-3 at the Mazuma Stadium.

The visitors found themselves three goals up after 29 minutes, courtesy of goals from Aidan Barlow, Dan Gardner and Joseph Olowu and took their advantage into the half-time break.

Cole Stockton pulled one back seven minutes into the second-half before adding a second 16 minutes from time, which was followed by Jon Obika’s first Morecambe goal before Diagouraga completed the comeback with a rocket from the edge of the area.

Speaking after helping his side secure all three points, Diagouraga said the fight back proved the character within the Morecambe squad.

“I think it shows the character we’ve got in this team,” he said.

“It would’ve been easy at half-time to just lay down and get beat, but we wanted to give it a go and we knew if we got one, then it was game on.

“We knew we had to keep going and keep going, we knew we were going to create chances, we had to take them.

“The way in which we won the game today, hopefully it’s a turning point and we can use that to really look forward up the league and try and climb up the table.”

The 34-year-old’s last goal in a Morecambe shirt came in March 2021, in a 3-1 home win over Carlisle United, and he admits today’s strike ranks up there with his favourite career goals.

Diagouraga added: “I actually caught it quite sweet, but it was just unbelievable, it was just great to get the three points, it was a massive game today and that’s what we wanted.

“I don’t shoot, so that one has to be right up there, definitely!

“Crewe was a massive game and we lost, we couldn’t lose back-to-back at home against Crewe and Doncaster, that wasn’t an option.”
