Robinson impressed with Stanley

27 January 2022

Manager Stephen Robinson has been impressed with Accrington Stanley this season and says Saturday’s Sky Bet League One encounter will be a challenging one.

After sharing the spoils in a six-goal thriller earlier on in the season at the Mazuma Stadium, Robinson is expecting another competitive fixture this time around.

He said: “This is a really big game for us, I have been really impressed with Accrington and they have been unlucky with results in recent weeks.

“John always has them fired up, they are a big, big strong side and it will be a challenge for us, there will be a great atmosphere on Saturday I am sure but it will be a tough game for us.

“There is not a lot of differences between teams at this level, every game is competitive, we need to carry on playing with the confidence we have played with in recent games.”

Defender Greg Leigh will miss Saturday’s Lancashire derby due to being called up by his national side Jamaica earlier on in the week, and Robinson says it frustrating to lose his left-back but it presents an opportunity for others to step-up to the plate.

He added: “I still don’t think I have picked the same team twice in a row, with Greg now away on international duty that isn’t going to happen.

“Ryan McLaughlin is still a doubt for Saturday as well, but the lads who have come in through the season, the likes of Liam Gibson and Ryan Cooney have done well for us.

“Some people's misfortune are other people’s opportunities, and it is up to those players to come in and grab that opportunity.”
