Adams says sharing minutes throughout squad is important in Pre-Season

9 July 2022

Derek Adams was pleased to give more players valuable minutes in today’s friendly against Macclesfield.

The Silkmen raced into an early lead when, on four minutes, Neil Kengni fired a driven shot into the bottom left corner of Adam Smith’s goal.

Danny Whitaker’s men doubled their advantage eight minutes later when a rebound fell kindly into the path of Alex Curran who slotted home from close range.

Second half goals courtesy of Cole Stockton and Ash Hunter respectively meant the game finished level, and Adams was pleased to grant playing time to more of his players.

“We obviously gave the players that didn’t play the other night [against Stalybridge Celtic] an opportunity today, that’s what you do in Pre-Season,” he said.

“Everyone now has started a game that’s fit to start a game, and that’s important at Pre-Season time.

“It gives them [the players] that opportunity to show the manager, the coaching staff what they can do, the supporters, it gives them the opportunity of game time.

“When you change a team as much as we have done, and that’s what happens in Pre-Season, but as we go on, we obviously get to a stage where we’re going to get the team that’s going to start the season.

“We’re not there yet, we’ve got to fulfil the fixtures we’re at at this moment in time, take players on, take them off, make changes, we made 10 changes today throughout the 90 minutes, so that’s not easy but second-half was far better than the first half.

“We changed personnel and you could see the quality in those changes.”

The Shrimps travel to Huddersfield to face the Terriers in a behind-closed-doors match on Tuesday before taking on Chester next Saturday at the DEVA Stadium, and the gaffer is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Adams added: “We’re playing six games at the start of Pre-Season and they’re all competitive games.

“Saturday against Chester will be the same as it is here today, and the Huddersfield game will be slightly different, we’re going to their training ground to play when there’ll be no supporters.

“Everybody has done their Pre-Season, they’re ready to come in and play games now.

“The ones we’ve taken in, I thought they looked bright, I thought they looked energetic, good football players and [they’ve] certainly added to the side.”
