Wins can pull Shrimps ahead says Adams

14 March 2022

Shrimps boss Derek Adams says, at this stage of the season with the table as tight as it is, one win can pull you ahead.

Only one point separates 22nd place Morecambe and Lancashire rivals Fleetwood Town in 19th with nine games of the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One campaign to play.

Given how close it is towards the foot of the table, and considering a win away at Bolton Wanderers last Tuesday night would’ve pulled the Shrimps out of the relegation zone, Adams says picking up maximum points can put the Club in a much healthier position.

“We need wins,” he said.

“The three points are massive at this stage in the season, that can pull you a good bit ahead.

“We knew that the other night against Bolton, we’d have been out the bottom four, but unfortunately, the decisions didn’t go for us later on in the game, and on Saturday [against Cheltenham], we haven’t done enough to win it.

Tuesday night’s fixture away at Shrewsbury Town, originally scheduled for 19 February but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, will see Adams take charge of his fifth game since returning to the club, and the gaffer is expecting a tough clash in Shropshire.

He added: “They’ve changed their shape on Saturday, they started in a 3-4-3 formation and then they changed to a 3-5-2, they’ve played the majority of their time that way this season.

“They’ve been able to pull away from the bottom four and it looks like they’re nearly safe now.

“It’s a tough encounter, they’ve got a number of really good players.

“We certainly had a lot of good openings in the game [at home to Cheltenham Town], we probably could’ve scored more goals because we’ve created some really good openings, we just have to be better in that final third as well.”
