Adams aiming for table-topping finish in Papa Johns Trophy group stage

17 October 2022

Derek Adams is hoping the Shrimps can round off their Papa Johns Trophy group stage campaign with a table-topping finish.

Morecambe travel to Sky Bet League Two side Harrogate Town in their final Papa Johns Trophy Northern Group A game of the campaign.

The previous two games ended in draws after 90 minutes, with the Shrimps picking up both bonus points on penalties, against Everton U21s and Hartlepool United respectively.

The gaffer is impressed with how his players have performed in the competition, and hopes they can top the group come Tuesday night.

“We’ve had two wins in the competition so far, both on penalty kicks against Hartlepool and Everton, that’s given us the four points,” he said.

“Now we go to Harrogate on Tuesday night looking to try and win the game if we possibly can, and hopefully top the group.

“We’ll try our best to do that [progress to the next round], I think we’ve worked so hard to get ourselves into the position we are, we want to try and get to the next round which obviously gives us money.

“We’ll change things about a bit on Tuesday night for the game to give some others an opportunity of game time, but we still want to try and get through in this competition.”

With Adams planning to rotate where possible, he provided a squad update regarding who will be available for Tuesday night’s trip to the EnviroVent Stadium.

“The 18 with us [against Burton] is the 18 we’ve got at this moment in time,” he explained.

“Donald Love is suspended for the game against Harrogate so he’ll miss out, Arthur Gnahoua can come back in because he’s still on a [league] suspension.

“We will change things around and give some players match time which will help us in the long run.

“We made five substitutions in the game [against Burton] which has enabled us to get a bit of freshness into the team.”
